Today I will upgrade knew from FreeBSD 11.2 to FreeBSD 12.0. It so happens that this is my last server at home which is still running 11.2, but I do have another server still on 11.2, but that one is at NYI. This post isn’t so much about beadm or about freebsd-update.
So I get that 10.4 is the upgrade to 10.3 and 11.1 is the upgrade to 11.0, but what is the difference between 10.4 and 11.1 and, more broadly, the diffrence between the 10 and 11 series? Why are both available at the same time? Asking because I am interested in switching over from Linux but my computer isn't really powerful enough to run a VM with a desktop and I am not interested in dual booting so I just want to go for it but don't really know which one to pick.

When updating from FreeBSD 10.2 to 11.0 and then running pkg upgrade if bind910 is installed it gets removed instead of upgraded or reinstalled due to the ABI change. Installing bind910 after the problematic update completed without issue, so its not clear why it was removed? |
