If you have Acrobat DC Pro, and are having problems finding the tool, use the tool search function at the top of the 'Tools' page. Just type in 'redact' into the search field. This should show you the redaction tool. In Acrobat, redaction was added as a standard tool. With the release of Acrobat 9, redaction is available for automation in JavaScript. This means you can create a one-click or batch-redaction solution. But, there is some work that needs to be done to set this up. If redaction is a real rarity (as in a one-time thing), you can download a free 30-day trial of Adobe Acrobat Pro. Adobe provides an overview of how to redact documents and remove sensitive information. It really only takes a few clicks. First, open the document you wish to redact, go to the Tools menu, then select Redact. Only Adobe Acrobat Professional has the redaction tool. There are several excellent tutorials about using the redaction tool, but it’s actually rather simple. Open the Acrobat document. Select the redaction tool from the “Advanced” menu. Select the text or object you want to redact, then apply the redaction.

This feature is only available in Acrobat.

Acrobat users can set predefined redaction codes, similar to custom text, toappear over redacted areas. These codes often indicate why the materialwas redacted. By default, code sets and entries are provided from the U.S. FOIA (FreedomOf Information Act) and the U.S. Privacy Act. Redaction codes can be saved,imported, and exported. This feature modifies the EnterpriseFiles installertable.

Redaction code set files are stored by default at <installationroot>Adobe<product&version><product>DocSettingsRedaction<language>. You can also use the Files and Folders feature to add these files.

Adding code set files¶

To add a new code set file:

1. In the Select Language list, choose the language of the file you want to add.
2. Click Add.
3. Navigate to the file.
4. Choose Open.

Removing code set files¶

To remove a code set file:

1. Select the file in the list.
2. Choose Remove.

Codes don’t save the current attributes for overlay text as part of the codedefinition, such as colors, font characteristics, and repetition or size oftext. Codes only make the overlay text itself reusable in future sessions andby other users with whom you share code sets. You set other attributes for thecode in the product’s Redaction Tool Properties dialog box.
